General working time

General working time is a general stipulation on working time. As the name would suggest, it is the most common type of working time. Collective agreements also use the term normal working time. General working time is applied unless the prerequisites for office working hours or period-based working time are met. General working time may also be applied if the prerequisites for period-based working time are met.

General working time consists of regular daily working time and regular weekly working time.

  • Regular daily working time is usually eight hours. However, collective agreements may contain stipulations on longer daily working time.
  • The maximum weekly working time is 40 hours and collective agreements may contain stipulations on shorter weekly working time. A maximum regular working time of 38 hours and 15 minutes is specified in most collective agreements.

In general working time, working time can also be arranged as average working time. In this event, weekly working time may vary. Working time scheduled on the work shift list must, however, comply with the collective agreement on average, usually 38 h 15 min.

Any additional work is compared to scheduled hours, which will reveal whether the employee has worked any additional work or overtime subject to compensation.
